We will be adding to this section explanatory comments on passages from the wird and the qasidas. The abbreviations RE and OE refer to pages in the Revised Edition (Quilliam Press. 2022) and the older edition (Qasida Press, 2015).

I seek forgiveness from Allah... (RE, p. 54, OE, p. 48)

I seek forgiveness of Allah.... The Messenger of Allah () said, “For the one who is constant in seeking forgiveness (from Allah), Allah will make a way out of every distress and a relief from every anxiety, and will provide sustenance from where he did not expect.”

O Allah, send blessings to our master Muhammad..... This form of invoking blessings upon the Prophet (S ) is referred to as al-ṣalāt al-ummiyya, based on the Quranic verse: So believe in Allāh and His Messenger, the unlettered Prophet (al-Nabiyyi l-ummiyyi) who believes in Allāh and His revelations. And follow him, so you may be rightly guided.[7:158]

There is no god but Allah.....The Messenger of Allāh (S ) said, "For the one who says ten time in a day, 'There is no god but Allah, One, without partner. His is dominion and His the praise, and He, over all things, has power,' it is like freeing ten slaves." This ḥadīth in various wordings appears in Muslim, al-Bayhaqī, Shuʿab al-īmān, Riyāḍ al-ṣāliḥīn, and elsewhere. In al-Bukhārī, the number mentioned is 100, and in a narrative attributed to Āʿishā’ (R) reported in the collection of Ibn Majah, the Prophet (S) said,  “There is no servant who says (this) when Allah returns his soul (that is, upon awakening in the morning) except that his sins are forgiven even if they be as vast as the foam upon the sea.”
