Those to whom people say, “The people have gathered against you! Fear them!” And they are increased in faith and say, “Allah suffices us, the most excellent one to trust.” (RE 64, OE 58)

According to Ibn ʿAbbās as quoted in Bukhārī, Kitāb al-tafsīr, Allah suffices us, the most excellent one to trust is what Abraham, upon whom be peace, said when he was thrown into the fire and what Muḥammad (S) said when they said to him, “People have gathered against you.” In Asbāb al-nuzūl, we find that these verses were revealed in respect to the battle of Uḥud and “the people” who were gathering against them were Abū Sufyān and those who followed him, gathering a force of 3000 just outside Mecca, to march against the Muslims who had begun with a force of 1000 but lost 300 when ʿAbdallāh ibn Ubayy and those who followed him withdrew.

According to Abū Hurayra (R), the Messenger of Allah (S) said, “If you are confronting some great difficulty, say: Allah suffices us, the most excellent one to trust.
